Painting basement ceiling
Painting new basement ceiling this week, painting over new drywall texture. First using a PVA drywall primer, to make sure finish coat is even as possible. Another trick is using PVA before texture, allowing texture, especially knockdown to go on as even, bonding to primer instead of the paper backing. Pulling the trowel across causing the knockdown, this primer makes a world of difference adding to the ease. Normally adds to the cost about .10 cents a sq.ft. but well worth it if the homeowner is willing to pay for it.

RE: Painting basement ceiling
Generally you'll find better quality paints at your local paint store as opposed to a big box paint dept where coatings are stocked based on price rather than quality....... but I don't know that it would make a whole lot of difference for your job. About the only difference you'd notice for your application is a better quality paint might cover better.
