Safety For All Outdoor Workers
At Harrison Contracting Company, the safety of our projects and the public we come in contact with is always held to the highest standard. Harrison Contracting Company's safety objective is to lead the residential painting and facility maintenance industry in safety performance. We are committed to being the safety leader in our industry. To attain this goal, we must prevent accidents by exercising caution and following safe practices while maximizing efficiency, thus assuring a safe and productive workplace. Safety is something that affects us all, at work and at home, every day of our lives. That is why safety is everyone's responsibility and the only way to ensure that all Harrison Contracting employees remain safe is for everyone to work safely together.
Much is written each year about two weather-related causes of death: tornadoes and heat. But another weather hazard associated with summer that kills dozens in the U.S. each year is lightning. People struck by lightning suffer from a variety of long-term, debilitating symptoms, including memory loss, attention deficits, sleep disorders, chronic pain, numbness, dizziness, stiffness in joints, irritability, fatigue, weakness, muscle spasms, depression, and more.
Hundreds are permanently injured each year by lightning strikes and summer is the peak season for the electric storms and Georgia and Florida are among the top five states with the highest number of lightning deaths during summer:
1. Florida
2. Colorado
3. Texas
4. Georgia
5. North Carolina
6. Alabama
7. Missouri
8. Ohio
9. South Carolina, and
10. New Jersey.
Some lightning information for painting contractors and all outdoor workers:
• No place is safe outside when thunderstorms are in the area.
• If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you.
• When you hear thunder, immediately seek shelter.
• Safe shelter is a substantial building or inside an enclosed, metal-topped vehicle.
• If there’s no shelter nearby, never stand under a tree and stay away from bodies of water and objects that conduct electricity (wire fences, power lines, etc.)
• Victims don’t carry an electrical charge after they’re struck and may need immediate medical attention.
Safety is a critical item on all residential painting projects for multiple reasons including protecting the welfare of employees, providing a safe work environment and controlling costs. As a means of reducing the risks associated with exterior house painting, safety can significantly impact the overall cost. A dedicated commitment to safety can help ensure project success and can impact your bottom-line considerably. A painting contractor with a great safety record is more efficient in reducing risks, has more on-time completion of contracts, less rework and is in effect, actively working to make the project more profitable.
