What can a good exterior paint job do for your home?
A fresh coat of paint can do wonders for almost any home. The right kind of paint job can make a house that nobody notices look good and a good house look great. Paint can be a very low-cost way to improve the architecture or structure of a house. It can be used to reduce the importance of features that don't look good-by blending them in with paint. Windows on a dormer that might stick out or a chimney that appears too big for the house can be made to seem less conspicuous by painting them a similar color as the roof or shingles. If the outside of a house is composed of many different kinds of materials (for ex: different types of wood siding, stone, cement, stucco, or brick), you can bring them together visually or have them blend with each other by painting everything the same color. On the other hand, paint can be used to bring out or emphasize the good features. For example, older houses such as the ones from the Victorian Era with their intricate and complex "Stick Architecture" offer many opportunities for beautiful color schemes. If a house has fancy or attractive trim around windows, doors, eaves or cornices, painting them a different color from the siding makes them much more pronounced, catching everyone's attention in a positive way. Although a fresh coat of paint on your home may not increase the value of it by leaps and bounds, you can be very certain that if the old paint is not in very good condition or the choice of colors is garish or unappealing, it will definitely diminish the value of the house. In fact, most real estate agents will recommend that a seller invest the money in a fresh coat of paint in these types of cases. There are many stories of houses that didn’t sell, primarily because both the trim and the siding were painted in an unappealing color. Once these homes were painted in the right colors, they quickly sold at the asking price.
All of the various different substrates or materials used for house siding can be painted with excellent results, if the correct type of paint is used. You can paint all of the following substrates or materials: different types of wood siding such as cedar shakes, clapboard, vertical siding, plywood, ect; vinyl or aluminum siding; asbestos shingles; hard board; stone; masonry blocks; bricks; and stucco. All types of wood siding must be painted or covered with some kind of protective finish such as a colored wood stain, a clear stain, a clear preservative or some type of wood sealer like varnish. Redwood is pretty much the only kind of wood siding that does not actually need some type of protective coating, but even redwood could become stained and discolored by dirt and does not weather evenly. It’s usually considered a good idea to put some type of coating on redwood. A clear coating of some kind of wood sealer is often recommended for redwood. Siding such as aluminum, stucco, and brick does not need not be painted. Often home owners will not paint these types of materials, because once they are painted they will have to be repainted every few years and this is often expensive and increases maintenance costs. But if painting can improve the appearance of houses that contain these types of materials and it often can, then it could definitely be worth the cost.
